An Author Reading is defined by Dream Write Publishing as a small community event which allows opportunity for authors, twofold: first, it gives them a chance to practise reading in front of a friendly audience possibly including family as well as close friends; and two, it allows them to share their work (new or old) to gain readership. This insightful experience is an important part of an author’s writing and publishing journey and is necessary in creating awareness for the literary arts. Developing an event of this sort is often formulated with a concurrent theme or sometimes it is just an event, in and of, itself. Last year, DWP cosponsored reading events with the local Writers Foundation of Strathcona County and with ardent arts supporter, Strathcona County Ward 2 Councillor Roxanne Carr. A favorite venue in Sherwood Park is Summerwood Second Cup, where owners, Wendell and Maria, create a welcoming atmosphere to encourage entertainment from local talent in support of arts and culture.
It is with great delight we announce a similar partnering in order to offer a safe venue for our readers and contribute a little fundraising to A Safe Place – Sherwood Park’s women’s shelter. The idea for this event generated earlier in planning as just another reading event for authors, and then became quickly a recognition for women in conjunction with International Women’s Day which occurs annually on March 8th. The fundraising portion followed naturally with a commitment to give back to the community in whatever small way we can. Most of us enjoy the safety of warm, loving homes and families… yet, in all we have done and how far we have come, there still exists a need to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Abuse and violence – although men are not immune from its incorrigible wrath – are more likely to be directed towards women and children. Often they must leave their homes with nothing but the clothes on their back in order to survive.
Planning complete. Authors are signing up to read and we hope to share the evening with a packed house – again. It is truly rewarding to be a part of a community that prides itself on participation, support, and caring. Thank you to everyone who has signed up. Standing together makes us stronger.
Dream Write Publishing will contribute $5 from every book sold that night to A Safe Place.
